2. The geography of Mecca
The city of Mecca lies to the west of Saudi Arabia, on the slopes of the Al Sarawat range, between the Hijaz and Asir massifs, specifically in the Oued Ibrahim valley at the foot of hills from 60 m to more than 500 m high. The port of Jeddah is only 65 kilometers away. The eastern part of the city is between 194 and 310 m above sea level. The western part at 400 m, is characterized by the presence of some mounts that can reach up to 900 m altitude as the Mount Jabal Tarki (which is the highest mountain in Mecca) and Jabal Kha Ndama which rises to 914 m. The central part has an average altitude of 294 m and the Kaaba is 300 m. This part is characterized by Mount Thor (759 m) which played an important role in the life of the prophet.
