4. Calgary Fort
Calgary Fort was originally built to drive out whiskey traders and attract Native Americans to sign treaties. Established in 1875 by the North West Mounted Police as ‘The Elbow’ or ‘Bow Fort’, it was later renamed Fort Brisebois after a rather unpopular Captain Brisbois until 1876, before being named Fort Calgary. It was purchased by the city of Calgary in 1975 and reopened as a museum and historic site in 1978. The 16-hectare site is located just east of downtown Calgary and is open year-round.
